Guard Yourself; at all cost!

Writer: Dr. MoNique GrahamDr. MoNique Graham

Recently, I made the decision to signal my availability for contract opportunities by adding the "open to work" banner to my profile on a work social site. This choice sparked various reactions from my network, showcasing a range of perspectives on the matter.

Some viewed the banner as a positive step towards exploring new opportunities, while others cautioned about potential risks associated with increased visibility. Amidst the mixed reviews, I decided to delve into the experience firsthand.

Following the update, I encountered several dubious contacts:

1. One company swiftly extended a job offer without an interview, prompting me to pause and seek further clarification before proceeding.

2. Another contact proposed a video call arrangement with a series of instructions and links, leading me to request a more direct form of communication.

3. A suspicious link embedded in an email raised red flags for me, drawing on my background in fraud and risk management.

4. Instances of vague company details and lack of substantial information highlighted the importance of discerning genuine opportunities.

5. While some contacts appeared genuine on the surface, the lack of concrete follow-ups underscored the need for discernment in engaging with potential opportunities.

In reflection, I believe:

- Measures should be in place to protect individuals signaling their availability for work from fraudulent activities.

- Those engaging in deceptive practices should be mindful of the repercussions, as karma plays a significant role.

- Genuine opportunities should prioritize direct communication and referrals to foster a trustworthy professional network.

Navigating the landscape of job opportunities requires vigilance and discernment to

distinguish authentic prospects from potentially misleading engagements. I took it off, and I SEE you!
